DIOCESE OF GARY

Holy Days of Obligation

The designation of Holy Days of Obligation varies from country to country.  Below is a brief guide to Holy Days:

1. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

2. The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, August 15, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

3. The Solemnity of All Saints, November 1, is a day of obligation unless it falls on a Saturday or a Monday.

4. Since it is the patronal feast of the United States, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is always a day of obligation when it is celebrated on December 8(When December 8 is a Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is moved to Monday, December 9, but without the obligation.)

5. Christmas, December 25, is always a holy day of obligation.

6. In Indiana, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter.
