Tell us about your family.
My parents are Mark and Sharon McDaniel who live and work in Michigan City. I have two younger brothers who both attend college at theUniversity of Vincennes.
Where are you from, and what is your home parish?
I am from Michigan City, where I grew up, attended public schools, and have been a lifetime parishioner at Queen of All Saints. I lived in Indianapolis for 4 years while I studied philosophy at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and graduated in 2014.
What seminary do you attend, and what year are you?
I am currently attending Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, IL where I am in my first of four years of theological studies.
What is it that draws you to the possibility of priesthood?
For me, the priest is a witness to the love of God in a crazy world. The opportunity to walk with people in the ups and down of life, share the Gospel, and give people hope is a blessing.
Who are some of your role models?
My parents, who raised me in the faith from birth, have always been an inspiration to me in the sacrifices they have and continue to make for my family. Two role models who largely influenced and aided my discernment of the priesthood were Fr. Rick Nagel and Fr. Kevin Huber. Fr. Rick demonstrated to me true servant-leadership in his ministries, where he served in his parish, on my college campus, and for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Fr. Kevin’s vibrant preaching, commitment to his flock, and humility really allowed me to see the humanity of the priest, and the importance not to take yourself too seriously.
What is your favorite Scripture passage?
But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
