*      People of the Pyramids Dialogue

People of the Pyramids:  the Dialogue Between the African American and the Hispanic/Latino communities is a collection of presentation that have formed the thinking of the leaders and participants in the four year process of formulating a dialogue between the African American and the Hispanic/Latino communities  throughout the United States.  The shaping of a movement to build bridges between the two communities began in the Catholic community and found great support among Black and Hispanic/Latino Catholics.

The changing racial make up of our country in the last twenty years has especially affected our urban centers.  Hispanics in the 70’s and 80’s repeated the migration pattern of moving from the southern parts of the nation and the hemisphere into major cities, as did African Americans in the 40’s and 50’s.  This repeat phenomenon has brought increasing contact between Blacks and Browns.  Unfortunately, there are growing signs of tension as both groups compete for jobs, educational resources, political clout, and housing as means to upward mobility.  This growing tension between Black and Brown people repeats the historical struggle for immigrating minorities since the founding of the Unites States.

People of the Pyramids:  The Dialogue between the African American and the Hispanic/Latino communities is the brain-child of Rev. Dr. Clarence Williams, CPPS and Roberto Piña - formerly of the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas.  Rev. Clarence Williams is the founder of the Institute for Recovery from Racisms and the author of Recovery from Everyday Racisms and People of the pyramids:  the National Dialogue Between the African American and Hispanic/Latino Communities.

Racial Sobriety: A journey from hurts to healing presents a process for dealing with racism as a social illness in the human family  the workshop outlines a treatment program for individual and to groups seeking to recover from the ‘stinking thinking’ of racism.  The racial sobriety approach finds that the white supremacy culture is the source of racism which affects every member of society regardless of their racial background.

The Rev. Dr. Clarence Williams, CPPS is the founder of the Institute for Recovery from Racisms  for the education of leaders in race relations.  He is the author of Recovery form Everyday Racisms and People of the Pyramids:  the National Dialogue Between the African American and Hispanic/Latino Communities.  In collaboration with Rev. Clarence Williams, nine anti-racism committee members are certified facilitator and can bring Racial Sobriety into your parish, committee or corporate settings.

*      Study Circles Discussion Groups

The goal of a study circle is to grapple with complex public issues in a democratic way, so participants can better understand those issues and find way to make a difference on them.  The process – democratic discussion among equals – is as important as the content.  In a safe, focused discussion, people exchange ideas freely and consider a variety of views.  Study circles seek common ground – that is, areas of general agreement – but consensus or compromise is not necessary.  Buy uncovering shared concerns and coming up with practical strategies, people often find they can work collaboratively to improve their community.

In collaboration with the Race Relations Council of Northwest Indiana, the Diocese of Gary Anti-Racism Committee offers the following opportunities to participate in Study Circles. Each Study Circle is limited to 15 persons.  For more information please contact J. Allen Johnson, Executive Director, Race Relations Council, 219.880.0043 / 219.512.3077, racerelationscouncil@earthlink.net
