Selection Process

The Diocese of Gary uses a discernment process with open    nominations to select Council Members.

The steps to the process are:

1. Formation- of the parishioners about the purpose of the Pastoral Council.

2. Open Nominations- an invitation to all of the parishioners to consider sharing their gifts with the Pastoral Council.

3. The Discernment Process- those who accept the nomination are required to attend  two evenings of orientation and an evening of discernment

4. The Selection- of the members can be made through a full discernment or by the drawing of “lots”, at the Sunday Liturgy.

The benefits of using a discernment process:

  • There are no winners or losers. Participants experience affirmation, support and unity

  • The total parish is involved through prayer.

  • The process allows new people to offer their gifts.

  • Those who are not selected are invited to share their gifts on a committee
