MISSION STATEMENT

Heartland Center serves the people of Northwest Indiana through research on social issues, educational programs, leadership training and community coalition building. Its mission is to work in solidarity with all segments of society, especially the poor, to construct a more just and human society.

Heartland Center was founded in 1987 as a joint project of the Diocese of Gary and the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus.

Father Thomas M. Gannon, S.J. is Director of Heartland Center, a policy research-social action center jointly sponsored by the Diocese of Gary and the Chicago Province of the Jesuits. Heartland Center serves as the Office of Peace & Social Justice of the Diocese of Gary.

Father Gannon is past director of the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University and former professor and chairman of the Sociology Department at Loyola University Chicago. For ten years he also served as the Chicago Province's Assistant Provincial for Formation. Before coming to Heartland Center he was pastor of Holy Family Parish in Chicago. Father Gannon is author of a book about spirituality (The Desert and the City), as well as The Catholic Challenge to the American Economy and World Catholicism in Transition. He has written and lectured around the world in the fields of sociology and the sociology of religion and is a frequent retreat director. His educational background includes graduate degrees in philosophy and theology, and a PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago.
