Description of Superintendent Position
The superintendent of Catholic Schools is responsible to the Bishop of the Diocese for
the implementation of the Catholic philosophy, goals and objectives of the Office of
Catholic Schools in the service of Catholic schools and the Diocese of Gary.
The Superintendent of Catholic Schools exercises leadership and provides expertise to
enable the Office of Catholic Schools' staff to deliver quality services to schools so
that the schools can operate in the most efficient and effective manner.
The Superintendent exercises leadership and provides expertise to enable communities to
develop schools based on a Gospel vision which fosters a Catholic environment and provides
quality religious education and academic programs.
Functions
Regarding Office of Catholic Schools Personnel
- Coordinates the efforts of the professional staff.
- Oversees and evaluates the work of schools office staff members.
- Practices effective personnel policies and procedures.
Regarding Office of Catholic Schools Operations
- Develops and monitors budget for the Office of Catholic Schools.
- Conducts research and planning for the Office of Catholic Schools.
- Oversees the development of effective communication within the Office and with schools.
- Coordinates the publishing efforts of the Office.
- Provides for effective communication with all those involved in Catholic school
education within the Church, including priests, religious community leaders and school
administrators by gathering, interpreting and disseminating information.
Works collaboratively with diocesan councils, commissions, organizations, and with
pastors and other parish staff.
- Anticipates future needs and possibilities of the schools.
Regarding the Schools of the Diocese
- Conducts research and planning in matters pertaining to Catholic schools present and
future.
- Oversees the operation of Diocesan schools.
- Supervises and reports the analysis of personnel, finances, and enrollment for national,
state and diocesan purposes.
- Provides evaluative procedures for school programs administrators and teachers, and,
measures the effectiveness of same.
- Analyzes educational trends in existing school programs and proposes alternatives and
reorganizational processes where needed for improvement.
- Provides an annual report on Catholic Schools to the Bishop.
- Assists in recruiting and screening all new school personnel and administrators in the
Diocese.
- Works with the broader educational and civic community within and outside the Church.
- Delivers formal addresses at school functions and attends school related ceremonies.
- Manages disputes which are not resolvable at the local level.
Relationships
The Superintendent of Schools is directly accountable to the
Bishop.
Collaborates with other Program Directors.
Represents the Diocesan Schools Office at diocesan, state, regional and national
meetings as may be appropriate.
Description of Coordinator of School Visits
Assist Superintendent with her daily routine operations
Use problem solving skills to answer phone calls concerning school
questions or complaints
Update and handle all current principals and teachers personnel
files
Maintain school files
Implement contracts, salaries, licenses, change of marital status,
address changes, terminations, etc. on database
Verify past and present teacher employment records in the Diocese
Create teacher and substitute directories for principals on all our
qualified applicants available to teach on a year-to-year basis
Prepare NCEA statistical reports and other similar Diocesan reports
for the State
Service the needs of the 30 diocesan principals
Prepare and send out school mailings
Provide numerous and varied forms to the schools during the course of
the school year
Inform insurance/pension departments of terminated, transferred, or
new teachers
Assist Superintendent on special projects or workshops
Prepare School Calendar, School Directory, and Student Enrollment
Information
Execute Tuition Assistance Program applications and correspondence,
and answer questions regarding application procedures
