Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:
Happy Easter! Jesus Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed!
Easter is a time of joy. Whatever situations we have endured and whatever hopes or fears we have for the future, today is a day to celebrate that Jesus has already won the victory over sin and death. This means that we should turn to Jesus with thanks and joy.
Joy is more than a passing elation; it can be the foundation for our lives. We can choose joy. We do so by reminding ourselves of all that God has done for us and all that he will do for us. Of course, we call to mind the salvation he offers to all of us. We also remember those things that he has done for each of us.
Here’s the core of Saint Peter’s message in the Acts of the Apostles reading for Easter: “He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:37-43)
As we thank Jesus for the gift of forgiveness and everlasting life (no small thing!), it’s good to take stock of the individual blessings received, prayers answered, and the certainty of our hope for the future in Jesus. Calling to mind this litany of thanksgiving is a spiritually healthy exercise. And it keeps our thinking pointed upwards to the heavenly realities that ground us as we live our daily lives. We hear this in the Easter Sunday reading from Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above.” (Col 3:1-4)
Living a joy-filled life is a great witness to those who may not have the same hope and faith in Jesus. Joy is compelling and infectious. Joy can fill a room and pull people out of their despair. People should see our joy and be curious as to how we can live such a life.
In my pastoral letter “We Proclaim Jesus as Lord!” (dcgary.org), the sixth of my ten principles of missionary discipleship states: “Joy should be evident in our invitation to others to enter into a personal encounter with Jesus.”
As I state in that letter, Pope Francis also knows that joy lies at the very heart of our faith. Indeed, his 2013 apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) is devoted exclusively to this defining aspect of missionary discipleship. He reminds us of the power of a joyful witness: “(A)n evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!” Indeed, he says too many Christians live “Lent without Easter.”
We are now in the Easter season, and this is a time to embrace the joy offered to us in Jesus and to share that joy with others. Jesus is Risen! That is the greatest and most joy-filled news we could ever receive.
May Jesus give you a joy that can’t be contained but must be shared with others. Have a blessed and joy-filled Easter season!

Ahora es el momento de la alegría
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
¡Feliz Pascua! Jesucristo ha resucitado, ¡ha resucitado de verdad!
La Pascua es un tiempo de alegría. Independientemente de las situaciones que hayamos pasado y de las esperanzas o temores que tengamos para el futuro, hoy es un día para celebrar que Jesús ya ha obtenido la victoria sobre el pecado y la muerte. Esto significa que debemos dirigirnos a Jesús con agradecimiento y alegría.
La alegría es más que una euforia pasajera; puede ser el fundamento de nuestra vida. Podemos elegir la alegría. Lo hacemos recordando todo lo que Dios ha hecho y hará por nosotros. Por supuesto, recordamos la salvación que nos ofrece a todos. También recordamos las cosas que ha hecho por cada uno de nosotros.
Este es el núcleo del mensaje de San Pedro en la lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles para la Pascua: "Nos encargó que predicáramos al pueblo y diéramos testimonio de que él es el designado por Dios como juez de los vivos y de los muertos. De él dan testimonio todos los profetas, de que todo el que crea en él recibirá el perdón de los pecados por su nombre." (Hechos 10:37-43)
Mientras agradecemos a Jesús el don del perdón y de la vida eterna (¡que no es poco!), es bueno hacer un balance de las bendiciones individuales recibidas, de las oraciones respondidas y de la certeza de nuestra esperanza en el futuro en Jesús. Recordar esta letanía de agradecimiento es un ejercicio espiritualmente saludable. Y mantiene nuestro pensamiento apuntando hacia arriba, hacia las realidades celestiales que nos fundamentan mientras vivimos nuestra vida diaria. Lo escuchamos en la lectura del Domingo de Pascua de la carta de San Pablo a los Corintios: "Si, pues, habéis resucitado con Cristo, buscad lo de arriba, donde Cristo está sentado a la derecha de Dios. Pensad en lo de arriba". (Col 3,1-4)
Vivir una vida llena de alegría es un gran testimonio para aquellos que pueden no tener la misma esperanza y fe en Jesús. La alegría es convincente y contagiosa. La alegría puede llenar una habitación y sacar a la gente de su desesperación. La gente debería ver nuestra alegría y sentir curiosidad por saber cómo podemos vivir una vida así.
En mi carta pastoral "¡Proclamamos a Jesús como Señor!" (dcgary.org), el sexto de mis diez principios del discipulado misionero dice " La alegría debe ser evidente en nuestra invitación a los demás a entrar en un encuentro personal con Jesús". Como digo en esa carta, el Papa Francisco también sabe que la alegría está en el corazón mismo de nuestra fe. De hecho, su exhortación apostólica de 2013 La alegría del Evangelio (Evangelii Gaudium) se dedica exclusivamente a este aspecto definitorio del discipulado misionero. Nos recuerda el poder de un testimonio alegre: "(Un) evangelizador nunca debe parecer alguien que acaba de regresar de un funeral". De hecho, dice que demasiados cristianos viven "la Cuaresma sin Pascua".
Ahora estamos en el tiempo de Pascua, y este es un tiempo para abrazar la alegría que se nos ofrece en Jesús y para compartir esa alegría con los demás. Jesús ha resucitado. Esa es la noticia más grande y llena de alegría que podríamos recibir.
Que Jesús te dé una alegría que no pueda ser contenida, sino que debe ser compartida con los demás. ¡Que tengas una temporada de Pascua bendecida y llena de alegría!
