COLUMN: The “Elect”: Stories of Conversion and Hope

One of the most enjoyable experiences I have as a bishop is the Rite of Election. This is a ceremony held on the first Sunday of Lent at the Cathedral of the Holy Angels in which adults to be baptized are publicly asked to state their intention and be welcomed by the community. This is one of the steps in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

It is so inspiring to greet adults who have taken this step forward to say “yes” to Jesus and declare that they want to be baptized. The community responds with our support as these soon-to-be-new Christians get ready for full initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, when they will be baptized, confirmed, and receive their first Holy Communion.

After the ceremony, we have a reception and I greet each of these newly “elect” and their sponsors and RCIA coordinators. I like to ask them how they decided to be baptized, to become Catholic, to begin this journey of faith. The answers are so very inspiring. When we speak of evangelization, it means that we share the hope we have in Jesus Christ and invite others to respond to Jesus. We share the Good News.

It is a blessing to speak with those who are responding to the Good News and are so very excited. The testimony of each one is unique. Here are a few responses I received:

One person shared that when a close relative died, many family members became more distant from God. This person chose instead to grapple with the big questions prompted by the death and that led to a deeper journey and encounter with God. The RCIA process has led this person to be baptized into Christ.

A young man shared that he had a good friend for whom his Catholic faith was very important. This friendship and witness had a great effect on him over the years. This opened him to explore the faith more deeply and now he is one of the elect.

Others shared that their fiancé was a practicing Catholic and that witness of faith along with a desire for unity in faith is leading them to be baptized. An older gentleman shared that he has been going to Mass with his wife for many years and discerned that it was time for him to join.

These stories are the Good News brought alive today. I encourage all of us to share our good news, whether we were baptized as infants or had a conversion as adults. Each of us should be prepared to give our witness of faith: “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” (1 Pet 3:15)

Listening to each other’s journey of faith can help us to grow and give us hope. My prayer is that during Lent we will all rediscover our love for God more deeply – and God’s love for us. Let’s share the Good News of Jesus and pray for those who will soon experience the saving waters of baptism and the joy of entering the Catholic Church.

Your servant,
